Monsters of Rock 1986

Monsters of Rock, Mannheim, West Germany, August 31, 1986. I was there. The daylong concert started with local rock goddess Doro Pesch and her band Warlock. (No pictures, though). Next on the bill was Bon Jovi. Yes that is Jon-Bon climbing the scaffolding. Followed by MSG. McAulley Schenker Group. Michal Schenker is Rudy Schenker (last picture above) of the Scorpions brother. Next up was Def Leppard. Def Lep had been laying low for a few years after Rick Allen the drummer lost his arm in an accident. This was one of the first concerts in four years. (See below). After Def Leppard was the Prince of Darkness himself; OZZY! And finally headlining was the Scorpions. This concert also marked my first (and to date only) appearance on an album (again see below). Yeah, I'm in there somewhere. How awesome is that?

  7. I was there, great concert. We were stationed in Baumholder. All of the motels in Mannheim were sold out and we had to sleep on the floor at the Bahnhof everytime. Awesome memories!

  8. I was there, stationed in Germany, came from Ettlingen Kaserne. Drove my Chevy Camaro which was taken away from me for 30 days for playing loud music. I think that song that got me busted was Motley Crue -Shout at the devil.
Anyway, my CO did not know that I had a second key to my Camaro so me and 4 buddies stole the car from the motor pool and drove to the concert. It was raining like crazy until Ozzy came on the stage (barefooted),the rain stopped, the sun came out and Ozzy started with Bark at the moon. The boys were drinking a lot and we partied way through the night. The next day, the commander found out about our unauthorized trip but to my surprise, we got lucky and nothing happened. I explained that we had the tickets already purchased and no matter what, we were not going to miss Monsters of Rock. Lifetime of memories cherish for life. I went to another one in Kansas City where I saw: Kingdom Come Dokken,Metallica,Scorpions and Van Halen. That's another story. Keep on rocking.

  9. Great photos and story! I was at this concert with my brother and friends. My dad couldn't go, but he was stationed at Bad Kreuznach.

The highlight to me of the concert was Def Leppard continuing to play in the rain. I recall that MSG had to call it short from the rain (and lightning?). The introduction of Rick Allen, aka The Thunder God, and the announcement that the backup drummer was caught at the airport or traffic. All of that felt like I was living in history at that moment. My buddies got a kick out of me knowing which Scorpions song was next because I knew the "World Wide Live" tracklist like the back of my hand.

  11. I was at the Nurnberg date, 30/08/86, and judging from the other comments, I think I got lucky because it didn't rain at all there ! So many memories attached to that event. I travelled all the way from Milan, Italy by coach to attend that concert. I made life long friends on that trip. I still have the memorabilia from that concert: a program, the original ticket, some photos and even some recording.
