Scarlett Point Lighthouse

Scarlett Point Lighthouse on Balaklava Island is one of six lighthouses I saw while on my Alaska cruise at this time last year. Scarlett Point sat right where the inside passage narrowed coming south.  Just across the shipping lane was the Pine Island Lighthouse. (Scarlett Point is named after British General James York Scarlett who led the Charge of the Heavy Brigade in the battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War. You've heard the poem "Charge of the Light Brigade"? same battle, same day, better results.) The original tower was built in 1905 and stood 36 feet to the light or 90 feet from the high water to the light. It was replaced in 1965. Scarlett Island light sits just 9 and a half miles southeast of the Pine Island light.
