Roanoke Fire EMS, old Fire Station No. 1

Roanoke Fire EMS, old Fire Station No. 1, 13 East Church Street, Roanoke, Virginia. Ground for this station was broken in 1906 and the new Fire Station No. 1 was opened in February 1907. Volunteer fire companies began protecting Roanoke in 1882, in March of 1907 they consolidated and formed the Roanoke Fire Department. This firehouse stayed in operation until the RFD began running calls from the new new Fire Station No. 1 on May 9, 2007, making this one of the oldest, continually operated firehouses in Virginia when it closed. Old Fire Station No. 1, modeled after Independence Hall in Philadelphia, was entered onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
