City of Santa Barbara Fire Department, Headquarters, Station 1, C. L. Tenney Memorial Fire Headquarters, 121 West Carrillo Street, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California. The first volunteer company was the Pioneer Company No. 1, formed in January 1874. They soon disbanded. Next came the George Washington Company No. 2 formed on Washington's birthday, February 22, 1882. In 1906 the Washington Company No. 2 became the Santa Barbara City Fire Department. SBFD operate out of 8 stations. Station 1 was built in 1960. Charles Leroy Tenney joined the department in January 1925 and in September 1938 he was named Fire Chief. Chief Tenney suffered a fatal heart attack while on duty July 25, 1963.
