Quakertown Fire Company No. 1

Quakertown Fire Company No. 1, 505 West Broad Street, Quakertown, Pennsylvania. Bucks County Station 17. Part of the Quakerstown Fire Department along with Station 18, West End Fire Company No. 2. I was unable to find out too much about Station 17, their website is currently down. The cornerstone reads 1971. Talks of a merger with West End started in 2008 and they have a combined website now.

High Country Sunset

Just another awesome sunset in the mountains of Colorado. You can take the camera man off the beach but you can't keep him from pointing that camera at the setting sun.

Loring Building Products (PG 181)

Loring Building Products is still an active business located on Main Street, Manayunk, Philadelphia. And yes that is Philly Fire Department Engine 12 on the left there. But beside the big old Painted Gentleman check out the U.S. Hotel Bar and Grille. That is a cool old building isn't it?

Hoboken

Hoboken, New Jersey, as seen across the Hudson River from Battery Park in Manhattan.
This picture is handheld, so it's not perfect. The red light right of center on top is an airplane landing in Newark, NJ.

Yonkers Fire Department, Headquarters Station

Yonkers Fire Department, Headquarters Station, 5-7 New School Road, Yonkers, Westchester County, New York. Home of Tower Ladder 71, Rescue 1 and the Mask Service Unit. Built in 1927. Yonkers Fire Department went paid in 1896 but many volunteer departments served the city prior to that. Stating with the Protection Engine Company No. 1 in 1852. YFD currently mans 12 stations throughout the city limits. Yonkers sits just north of the Bronx, NYC.
Early Sunday morning while I was taking these pictures they got a run just around the block from the firehouse. I noticed, while fixing the pictures that the lights on the front of the building are just like the original lights on my old firehouse (Vigilant Hose Company of Shippensburg, PA. at 129 East King Street) Then I saw that this station was built in 1927 and ours was opened in 1928.

Happy Turkey Day

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. These turkeys were strolling the high country of north central Colorado. They are Merriam's Turkeys, one of the five subspecies of North America, along with the Eastern, the Rio Grande, Gould's and the Osceola (or Florida) Wild Turkey. The Merriam's are found primarily in the ponderosa pine forests of Colorado, New Mexico and northern Arizona. The can be distinguished by the lighter feathers at the base of their tail.

Beetem Looms

This is the smoke stack from the Raglin Hand Craft Mills I posted last month.  It's like the chicken and the egg, which came first, Raglin or Beetem? (I just said eggs and Beetem in the same sentence.) That's the Raglin building to the left, it sits on East Louther Street in Carlisle.

Atop the Light

This past summer, well mid-September, while in Chincoteague, I finally took the tour of the Assateague Light House. The only scary part was the walk from the parking lot. But luckily the mosquitoes weren't too bad if you kept moving. It was great to get to climb the spiral staircase to the open deck. The view of Chincoteague Island and the beach was like nothing I've seen before. This lighthouse was built in 1867, replacing a shorter one built in 1833. This one is 142 feet tall.

Natalie Bakery Inc., NYC

No trip to Chinatown is complete without two stops. One is Natalie Bakery on the corner of Forsythe and Grand Streets for a pineapple bun. At 75 cents each it is the best bargain in the neighborhood for breakfast. The second is Vanessa's Dumpling House on Eldridge Street. I didn't make it there last Sunday, so technically, my visit remains incomplete. But actually my trip was to Yonkers and we had a cheese pizza at Dunwoodie Pizzeria on Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers. Awesome.

We did take a quick trip around Manhattan Friday night...

Western Eagle County Ambulance District. 360 Eby Creek Road, Eagle, Colorado. Serving the Eagle River Fire Protection District, the Gypsum Fire Protection District (home of Station 2) and the Eagle County Airport. Formed in 1988. From what I am reading, the day before I took these pictures they teamed with the Eagle County Ambulance District and formed the Eagle County Paramedic Service.

Sunrise Across the Big Meadow

Sunrise, the time of day when everything that happened yesterday is forgotten. Clean Slate. A new beginning. And when, an hour and a half after sunrise, a coyote trots across the meadow you're watching you realize that your midday nap is gonna be early today because that damn song dog just ended your morning hunt.

Co Asbestos

An old manufacturing warehouse  of some sort. Not sure what else the smoke stack read. Now it is simply CO ASBESTOS. Northeast corner of Stokely Street and Roberts Avenue in northwest Philadelphia.

Altitude Adjustment

I climbed and climbed Tuesday afternoon and when I checked the GPS I found myself at 10,968 feet in altitude. I saw that as a challenge. Win.

Quakey

I swear my next vacation to Colorado will be late September when all the Aspen look like this. Maybe I'll stay.

Highspire Fire Department

Citizen's Fire Company of Highspire. 272 Second Street, Highspire, Pa. Dauphin County Company 55. Sorry but the website really tells you nothing about the company, except that the are either the Highspire Fire Department, Highspire Fire Company No. 1 or the Citizens Fire Company No. 1 of Highspire. I did find something about a 100th anniversary in 2009. They run two engines out of this station. Oh yeah, I think I may have seen an old fire station a few block west of here. This Hurricane Agnes plaque is mounted between the apparatus doors, the Susquehanna River sits about 1200 feet from their front door.

I had posted this before. This was taken by me at the 1981 Dauphin County Convention Parade.

Sunset from the Beach

Yes, this proves that it is possible to sit on the Atlantic Beach and watch a beautiful sunset at the same time. We were on the southern end of the public beach on Assateague Island, Virginia, watching the sun fall over Tom's Cove and the southern end of Chincoteague Island.

Feathers in the Grass

Looks more like a crime scene. I'm not sure if this is the abrupt landing zone from a hunters shotgun blast or a coyote's dinner table. I just know the colors of these ring-necked pheasant's sure caught my eye.

Home on High

This is our tent. Sitting at 10,700 feet above sea level. Home sweet home for a week.  Second picture (first panorama) is standing at the front flap. Wood stove to the left, gun rack and three bunks. On the right was the cooking prep table, the cooking facilities, food storage and the other three bunks. As you can see the table sat right inside the front flap. Two Coleman lanterns hung from the main beam. This is the first year we had a floor attached to the tent. made for a lot less dust.

Header Review 11

I kind of forgot to do a Header Review last month, so here it is now. These are the headers from the past six months.
  • May 2012 - this is the front of our new fire station. The lettering was not done yet. And on June 16, 2012 the Vigilant Hose Company No. 1 and Shippensburg Area EMS dedicated their new home on the intersection of Walnut Bottom Road and East Orange Street in Shippensburg, Pa.
  • June 2012 - Mimmo's Pizza played host to the Outskirts this month. Mimmo's sits on the intersection of Hunting Park Avenue and Henry Avenue in the City of Philadelphia. Brought to you by Blah Blah Soda.
  • July 2012 - scenes from the March to Destiny street skirmish. Shippensburg was occupied by Confederate troops in late June and early July of 1863 while the troops made their way to Gettysburg. Shippensburg commemorate this every year on the last weekend of June.
  • August 2012 - details of the Market Street National Bank , now the Residence Inn, in center city Philadelphia.
  • September 2012 - scenes from Charm City. The Orioles outfield celebrates another win, too bad it wasn't against to evil empire in October before the Yankees rolled over and played dead for the Tigers.
  • October 2012 - Home Away From Home; downtown Eagle Colorado. The brick building on the left? The Brush Creek Saloon... Pork & green chiles and a draft Fat Tire. Well worth the 29 hour drive.
