October 1st - Dawn to Dusk

October 1st, the pivot on which the trip hinged. An early morning hike, a 300 foot elevation change in 600 yards at 5000' above sea level, had my 700' lungs screaming. With limited suitable public land with access, I was not the only guy up there. Along with several pronghorn I also saw a northern harrier and had a close pass by a coyote. And to see the sunrise from a hilltop in Wyoming, surrounded by sage and shortgrass, then watch the sun set behind the Bighorn Mountains was amazing.

Sheridan, Wyoming

Mid day on Wednesday we took a break from scouting and walked around  Sheridan. Cool little town that held just a bit of the old west still. We went into King's Saddlery. For the laid back exterior, the inside opened into a large showroom of tack, tools and souvenirs. Then slip out the back door and across the alley to their old west museum and custom leather shops. Before it was back to work though, a stop for a quick Bomber Mountain Amber Ale at Black Tooth Brewing.

Scout Day

On the final day of September we did a little scouting for my pronghorn hunt. We circled the area, we drove many gravel roads and then came back in the afternoon and did it again. We saw plenty of game, pronghorns, mule deer, whitetail and a coyote. The coyote, actually, was the only critter that we saw on the one square mile that was suitable and had public access in the area I could hunt. It made tomorrow's plans easy to make.

Crossing Eastern Wyoming

Tuesday, by lunchtime, we were finally crossing into Wyoming. We drove the back roads through Newcastle, Wright and into Kaycee. Then north to Buffalo. Kaycee is the hometown of  World Champion Bareback Rider and Western singer Chris LeDoux. The statue "Good Ride Cowboy" (yes, Chris is the cowboy Garth Brooks was singing about) is in downtown Kaycee at Chris LeDoux Park.
