Falling Away

These are some of the only fall color pictures I took this year. I don't know where the time got to. Was it a quick and not too brilliant fall color year or was I just preoccupied and didn't notice? Maybe it happened while I was running around out west. It definitely was well over out there. Perhaps I'll go for a drive tomorrow afternoon and see if there might be anything left.

Welcome to Redneck Country - Guest Post

Another Guest Post appearance from Sparky. Sparky was camping last spring at an area tractor show. Colorado update: Today is the vacation portion of the trip. Out of the mountains and in town we are waiting while our game is being processed. Probably visit old places and new places. Maybe taking a dip in the Hot Springs. Definitely eating good.

How do you know when you are in redneck country? Well ,I was at the Spring fling tractor show in Franklin County this weekend (April 26-27, 2008). It's true love when you haul your girlfriend/wife/sister around on the back of your tractor. And the orange tractor/car, that’s the Sunday church car. It is cool looking. Had a great time, all but the rain. Can’t wait until next spring, hope I won’t get flooded out. They have a show in late summer too. August, but I don’t camp at that one, too hot. Have a great day.

Cincinnati Gentleman - Painted Guest Post

Cincy Bill returns today with another post. Actually this is three different posts he sent me and I combines into one big Painted Guest post. Thanks Cincy Bill. Colorado update: This morning is more hunting. The packers should be in camp around noon to pack us back down the mountain. Then it's getting a shower and eating something good.

The Belmont Cafe was located 1121 Race Street, Cincinnati, Ohio. It was a dive restaurant. It was razed in 2006 to make room for Cincinnati Public School's new School for Creative and Performing Arts, (Grades 4 through 12) which is scheduled to open this spring.

The Dennison Hotel is located in the downtown central business district of Cincinnati at 716 Main Street. It is an eight-story building which was built in 1890, is currently a 105-unit single-room occupancy hotel.They rent rooms by the week. The clientele is one step up from the homeless.
Bill Haas is a local painting contractor and has done some other wall signs in Cincinnati.

The Greater Cincinnati Police Historical Society Museum http://www.gcphs.com/index.html is located at 959 West Eighth Street
in the back part of the Cincinnati Police Federal Credit Union.

The first painting is by the front door of the museum and I am pretty sure it is Police Officer Jim O'Neal and Handsome the first unofficial police canine.

The second painting was completed this summer as project of the "Art Works" where art students complete public art projects such as this.
The figures left to right Old Ohio State Patrol, Old Cincinnati Police, Hamilton County Sheriff's Deputy. The buildings are the Carew Tower and the PNC Bank Building the two tallest buildings in Cincinnati.

Of Elk and Hawks - Guest Post

Another Guest Posting from Grizz. His daughter is at Penn State Main Campus in State College, Pa. Colorado update: Today is my last full day of hunting.

I attached pics of the trip up to Winslow Hill. This bull was trying to cross the road around the time of 7:00 pm. Busy area with sightseers.

Talked to my daughter last night and she said that as she was leaving her apartment yesterday evening, there was a squirrel messing around in front of her. All of a sudden, this hawk swooped down and nabbed the squirrel, almost clipping her. The hawk landed a few yards away and she was able to snap this picture.

Hello everyone

Was walking around this weekend and spot these two little baby birds. I guess they are baby blue jays, but the yellow tips on the tail feathers and red tips I’m not sure. Need your help does anyone know what they are?

PS With the help of the library and than the Internet. I have found out what kind of bird. It is a Cedar Waxwing.

Miami & Erie Canal (Painted Guest Post)

This painting is on Central Parkway between Vine and Race a few doors down the block and on the other side of the street to the painting of Cincinnatus. Central Parkway was the location of the Miami & Erie Canal. The paint showes a tow boat and what the Cincinnati looked like along the canal in the Mid 1800's.

The Miami & Erie canal was a development and joining of three canals, the Miami Canal begun in 1925 and running from Cincinnati to Dayton, the Miami Extension and the Wabash & Erie Canal which terminated at Toledo/Lake Erie. Renamed the Miami & Erie Canal in 1849 it had one summit, the Loramie Summit, also called the Loramie Plateau, which was 374 feet above Lake Erie and 516 feet above the Ohio River a total lockage of 890 feet. From the Lake to the north end of the summit was 124 3/4 miles, the summit 24 miles and then 100 miles to the Ohio, totaling approximately 249 miles. It had 19 aqueducts, 3 guard locks, 103 lift locks, 50 to the north of the summit, 53 to the south, all constructed at 90 feet X 15 feet. The system cost $6.7 million or $12,000 per mile.
Between 1861 and 1878 the canal was leased to private enterprise that greatly neglected the canals maintenance. The flood of 1913 ended canal traffic as it did throughout Ohio. The Miami & Erie Canal was not officially closed until 1929.
