Shaft Volunteer Fire Department, 19303 Shaft Road SW, Frostburg, Maryland. Allegany County Station 17. Organized in 1938, their original station was built in 1939, it included a bar and tavern for fundraising purposes. This building would later, in 1962, be donated to the church. In 1962 they built a new station, with a social addition added to it in 1979/80. Currently SVFD operates 2 engines (one an engine/rescue), a brush truck and a utility and average 200 calls per year.
