On Halloween Night...

Dear Great Pumpkin,
I am looking forward to your arrival on Halloween night, I hope you bring me lots of presents. You must get discouraged because more people believe in Santa Claus than you. Well let's face it; Santa Claus has had more publicity, but being #2, perhaps you try harder. Everyone tells me you are fake, but I believe in you.
P.S. If you really are fake don't tell me. I don't want to know.

Little Brown Jug Game 2013

More of Last Friday Nights Football. This time it's the annual Little Brown Jug game between the Shippensburg Greyhounds and the Big Spring Bulldogs. Being Ship's last home game of the regular season it was also Senior Night. The LBJ rivalry has been around since 1956 when the two schools from neighboring towns, decided that the winner of the annual contest got to keep the Jug at their school until next year. In my day the Jug was in our trophy case all three years. This year it stays with the 'Hounds again after a 53-7 win on a cold breezy night.

Harvest

Although this picture was taken a month ago, the local farmers continue to pick the corn and harvest the soybeans. Even a lucky few are out getting that last cutting of hay. Soon time to put the fields to bed for the winter.

Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway

The Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway, 11114 Lincoln Avenue, Hagerstown, Md. Washington County Station 26. Formed in 1949 the members got right to building their first station. In 1966 they began construction of a new metal building at the old Halfway School House when they outgrew the original station. Then in 1995 a rehab of the old station began to expand the bay area and the living quarters to what is there today. The VFCH consists of volunteers and career medics and EMTs.

Minglewood

This very large Les Paul guitar sits outside Minglewood Plaza in midtown Memphis, Tennessee. This is the place we saw The Departed and Rob Baird perform. We left here near midnight and headed for Beale Street.

And He's Outta Here

This Red-Tailed Hawk was spotted along the Big Spring on the outskirts of Newville, Pa. These pictures have really been zoomed in, but even at this distance I was too close for his comfort.

Pennsylvania Elk

More elk pictures from Benezette, Elk Country. Gone in Pennsylvania since the 1870's elk were first reintroduced to the Allegheny forests of northcentral PA in 1913 when the Game Commission bought 50 Rocky Mountain Elk and brought them in from Yellowstone. 22 more were bought from a PA preserve. Through ups and downs, today, a hundred years later, there is about 900 elk roaming the woods and fields.

Cabbage White Butterfly

This is a Cabbage White Butterfly on some roadside Aster. It's been over a week since I posted a bug and posey picture, I figured I was OK to try another one. These are one of our most common butterflies. With a 2 inch wingspan, whiteish green underside and the black dot on the wing. One dot is a male, two is a female.

Sun Studio (PG 192)

What can you say about Sun Studio in Memphis? This is the place that a truck driver stopped in to record a record for his Mama's birthday. Sam Phillips was out that day so the secretary, Marion Keisker, recorded it. She thought he had potential and told Sam about this kid named Elvis Presley. Sun Records also brought us Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis and Johnny Cash. The studio first opened in 1952 and saw a lot of talent inside these walls through the 50's and to some extent today.

The Barn and the Sunset

Driving home from Newburg last week I had an eye to the sky. I could tell there was a good sunset brewing. I ventured off course to get on a slower, quieter road for some pictures. And to be honest the shots I took without the barn just didn't look as good. I guess the farm gives it perspective. This would be the evening before the rains. I measured 7 inches of rain in two days.

Hokendauqua Fire Company

Hokendauqua Fire Company, 3022 South 2nd Street, Whitehall (Hokendauqua), Pa. Lehigh County Station 38. Hokendauqua is one of five stations in the Whitehall Township Fire Department along with Fullerton Fire Company, West Catasauqua Fire Company, Eqypt Fire Company and Cementon Fire Company. Nothing could be found on the interwebs about the building or the company. You can still see the old original station peeking out from behind. The front part is part old and part new. An older steel building sat in front of the old station and was upgraded and replaced in 2013 by a new and bigger steel building, adding another bay to the south and a gear room to the north.
