Geddy's Moose

This is the moose. This is the moose that sits atop Geddy's in Bar Harbor, Maine. I tried to straighten the moose but, hey, if he's crooked, he's crooked.

Day 1, Year 6

I was gonna blow off posting today. I've done a lot of that this year on the weekends. But since today is my five year blogerverary.  A quick summary of my year here in the outskirts. 308 posts for a total all time of 1759 posts. 287 comment. even though not a single person has said a work around here since the 19th of last month.  Above is just some of what I did last year. Lately I've had my head elsewhere, trying to get a firehouse built. And hopefully I get my bum leg working good again and I can get some new and interesting things to get  pictures of.
Top to bottom, this was my year. Christmas vacation this past year was in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Baseball games, for me, picked up from last year Harrisburg Senators, Delmarva Shorebirds, Baltimore Orioles and the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Coca-Cola Park shown here) I entered five pictures at the Shippensburg Fair and brought home a first place ribbon and a $7 check for my sunrise picture in Chincoteague. I finally remade some of my old Gettysburg postcards, I plan on doing more this year.
Spent Father's Day last summer in my Mom's family's hometown of Coaldale, Pa. Spent a day during the fall  in the outskirts of Star Tannery, Virginia. Took an anniversary cruise on Chincoteague Bay. Found some sunflowers up in the State Game Lands. And as part of the new firehouse we removed the bell from the old firehouse.
Went to a couple of concerts since last year. First concerts in a long time. I saw Miranda Lambert and I saw her husband last fall. Blake Shelton is nuts. Awesome concerts. Both of them. I wish I could have taken a real camera in, instead of the crappy Nikon point and shoot. Posted and linked a bunch with the people over at Barn Charm. I got bored and scanned pictures from a lifetime  ago. (Shown is my hike to the top of Mt. Ogden in Utah, back in 1985)
As my son gets older I've been tagging along again when the siren blows. We also made our third trip to NYC for Lunar New Year. Took some other great NYC pictures while we were there. (My most visited post of all time is my Engine 55 pictures from our 2010 trip to NYC).
I also took some senior pictures. Not my favorite thing to do but I think I can learn. Remember, I don't take people pictures, since I don't like people. And I took my last soccer pictures.
No promises this time on the next year. I'll do what I can. Not sure where Father's Day will take me.  Don't know where or if there will be a summer vacation. My semi-annual camping trip is the only sure thing right now. Maybe I can bring home a couple coolers full of elk meat this time. I'm due.
We'll see.

Sunset from the Pier

While on Christmas vacation in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina we walked out onto the Cherry Grove Pier to watch the sunset one evening. It was well worth it. We sat on the upper deck watching the fisherman as the sun sank down the beach. Cool. So, cool.

King's Famous Pizza

King's sits along Route 17, King's highway in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I know there is no neon here  but the colors and brightness put this on my hit list of night shots. They seems to be busy this evening.
My posts of older pictures with nothing new continues whilst I serve out my time on the IR. If things don't start looking up this week end I may break out the scanner. I have some ideas.

The Mermaid's Purse

OK, so it's not really a mermaid's purse. Or the devil's purse. What it is is an egg case for a skate. And a skate is a fish, more specifically a ray. The egg cases can be found on the beach, usually empty. The hooks are so that it attaches itself to seaweed and doesn't float away.

Yellow Monday

Just a little floral sunshine on a rainy day. Or is it just a weed?

The Mighty 4 x 400 Relay Team

It's not just track and field season here. No. It's half way through track and field season. Two more regular season meets. A couple invitationals. And the post season. Training that starts in late fall and flows through the winter comes and goes so fast that I can't fathom that the end is near. Shipensburg's 4 x 400 relay team briefly held onto 2nd place in the county. They have since fallen to 4th place out of 15 teams. Don't worry boys, there still a few more chances to improve on that. If not, 2nd place is some damn good running.

Bowery Signage

Random signs along The Bowery in New York City. The first two are from the same store. Whether it's a Bowery Restaurant Supply store or Bowery Aqua, Inc. I don't think it matters. Number 3 is the Bowery Mission. This is the mission you hear about in old movies. It was basically a homeless shelter. Four is the Rosewood Furniture Store and, I think, it is going out of business. And lastly, is the Diner at the Sunshine Hotel. Love neon.

C&O Canal, Harper's Ferry

This is a view along the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio) Canal in Harper's Ferry West Virginia. That's the old railroad bridge straight ahead. The Potomac River flows just beyond the trees on my right. Maryland Heights Overlook is to my left and straight up. The sign on my immediate left says, "Lock 33". And finally the old white washed roofless building is the Lock House.

Two unrelated things I learned today.
Number one: when I Googled to see what this building was , I realized that every single tourist to Harper's Ferry stood right about here and took this same picture.
Number two: the number one phrase used to connect with the OoS web blog yesterday was "Amish Bowling".
Yeah, two completely unrelated things. Like I said.

Sailing Past the Bald Head Island Lighthouse

This is as close as I would get to the Bald Head Island Lighthouse in North Carolina. To get any closer would have involved a ferry ride and walking once we got to the island. We viewed it from afar. Built in 1817 it stands 90 feet tall. It was ultimately decommissioned in 1935.

This Bleeding Heart

More of the color in my gardens. The Bleeding Hearts are in the small patch by the driveway beside the shed.

Norwich Twp VFD, McKean County, Pa.

Norwich Township Volunteer Fire Department. McKean County Station 12. Located on Route 46, near Christian Hollow Road, in Crosby, Pa., just south of Smethport, the county seat.
I was looking for something else when I found this picture I had taken in 2006. When I looked on Google I found no website, not many departments in McKean County do. I did find a facebook page for them. McKean County is located in  north central Pennsylvania and is where Bradford, Pa. is located.

Manayunk Bridges

This is a view of the Penn Central Railroad bridge from the Green lane bridge over the Schuylkill River in the Manayunk neighborhood of north Philadelphia. I was sitting in traffic trying to get on the Schuylkill Expressway west and out of Dodge.

266 Bowery

Street view picture of the Globe Slicers store at 266 Bowery in New York City. Evidently they have been here in business since 1947. The shop is so small and cramped that they set up on the sidewalk to do their repairs.

Ladder 10, Philadelphia Fire Department LODD

Yesterday morning I had to run to Philly to work for the day. As I exited the turnpike into the city I was finding out that tragedy had struck the Philadelphia Fire Department just hours before my late morning arrival. While fighting a 5-alarm warehouse fire in Kensington, a wall in an adjacent furniture store collapsed and trapped 5 firefighters. Eventually two, Lt. Robert Neary and FF Daniel Sweeney, died in the line of duty. I was working about 4 miles away in the West Allegheny neighborhood and working my way up through Manayunk, Roxborough and Shawmont. In Shawmont I saw the duty crew of Engine 66 hanging the black bunting. And on my way back through Roxborough Ladder 30 and Engine 39 also had their bunting hung and their flag down.
