Packing One Out

It's wasn't mine but I did have one 50 feet away that morning. Later I headed up above the pond to help with the quartering. Just after lunch Maynard brought the mules up to haul it back down to Base Camp. Then it was back to the meadow below camp until dark.

And Then It Snowed. Sideways.

Sunday started out like any other day (when your in a tent over 10,000 feet in the Rockies). There was some snow overnight but maybe things will get moving. By 8:30 that aforementioned snow was alternating between blowing sideways and blowing upwards. How am I gonna shoot an elk when I can't see 25 yards? Back to the tent. These were taken Monday morning. And for the third year now I climbed to over 11,000 feet. That's what you call hunting with an altitude.

Tent Sweet Tent

The tent. The canvas castle. Home for a week. Most nights didn't get much lower than the twenties. First afternoon was a wet wintery mix. Good time for a nap. The wind blew. Oh, it blew. Then it snowed. And snowed. Meals cooked. Strategies planned. Early to bed. Early to rise. Wipe your feet.

Way Up There

A panoramic view from the top of the world. On Sheep Mountain. I must have been way up there 'cause you can see over the trees, which is way up there.

Pack In 2014

Pack in took about an hour and forty-five minutes, putting us about 2 1/2 miles from the base camp. For someone not accustomed to riding a horse or mule it makes sitting on a plank bench or 5 gallon bucket a little tender for a few days. It also makes taking a picture from horseback difficult. Even when you triple tap the shutter you get a lot of blurry pictures.

Seward was established in 1902, along with the other buildings in the fort, the fire station was built between 1902 and 1904. In early 2014 the old firehouse was sold to the owners of the Guardhouse next door who restored the hose tower in late spring 2014.

Colorado's I-70 Corridor

Some of the remaining fall color along the Interstate 70 corridor west of Denver through the Vail area. Remember these were all taken through the truck's bug infested windshield or out the passenger window.
