Geographic Center of the Nation
Belle Fourche, South Dakota
September 2018
Prior to the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to the Union the center of the nation was near Lebanon, Kansas. In 1962 a new geographic center was established 20 miles north of Belle Fourche, SD. Everyone thought this would bring tourism to that spot. But being in the middle of nowhere, that didn't pan out. So, the powers that be in Belle Fourche created a granite monument to the point on the edge of town and they actually saw a tourism bump. Even though the "True" center is 20 miles away.
