40 Years Ago - June 1, 1976

Last weekend we hiked into the Tuscarora State Forest north of Newville near Doubling Gap to find the wreckage of a twin engine Piper Aztec that had crashed into the mountain forty years ago. On the afternoon of June 1, 1976 the Piper went down in severe lightning, rain and hail killing all 6 members of a Milford, NJ family who were enroute to Pittston, NJ from Indianapolis. As a firefighter I've stood in these places soon after they happened. To stand there 40 years later knowing that - take away the rust and faded paint and lack of personal items - this is what the searchers found on the rainy evening. The feeling is somewhat familiar.
