Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, Hamm, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. I visited here on our way back into West Germany from a weekend vacation to Lux City. This place is big. 5,076 burials including General George S. Patton. A lot of the dead fought at the Battle of the Bulge. The Battle was fought nearby in the winter of 1944/45. This was one of the trips I made within my first six weeks in Europe.

For those about to rock - FIRE - We salute you!

AD/DC's 1985 album Fly On The Wall, you remember all the hits from that masterpiece don't you? Nobody does. At the time it was just an excuse to be out on the road.  And on February 4, 1986 I was in the crowd. At one point I remember being just one or two sweaty rockers from the stage. During the one encore they played For Those About to Rock, We Salute You, and they fired the cannons in the middle of the chorus. The concert was at the Rhein-Neckar Halle in Eppelheim, Germany, which was about 40 miles east of base. Opening act was Fastway, you may remember the song "Say What You Will".

If you hadn't noticed yet this week is "Scanweek". Today we are going back to London, July 1985. It was just a quick weekend trip to visit friends of a friend and do a bit of sightseeing. The highlights were... Big Ben; completed in 1858, Big Ben is actually the large bell, the tower it is in is Elizabeth Tower.  The classic double-decker buses of London; this one is a Routemaster, most of these are now retired. My Tube Pass for riding the underground. Piccadilly Circus; a major intersection on London's West Side. Reminds you of Times Square in NYC. Westminster Abby; or the Collegiate Church of St Peter at Westminster, construction began in 1245. Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square; the 169' column was constructed between 1840 and 1843, the lions were installed in 1867. Admiral Horatio Nelson died at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. The Tower Bridge; an 801' drawbridge over the River Thames, built 1886 to 1894. Hard Rock Cafe, London; this is the original Hard Rock cafe, opened June 14, 1971. By this time, 1985, they were also in Toronto, LA, Roppongi Japan, NYC, San Francisco, and Stockholm.

Trier, Germany

Trier, Germany sits on the Luxembourg border north of France in the state of Rheinland-Palatinate. The summer of 1986 was my second time visiting the city. Originally founded 1300 years before Rome and in the 1st century BC the Roman Empire took over. The first picture is the Porta Nigra (or Black Gate) was built by the Romans between 186 and 200 AD. The second picture is McDonalds (which is still there) along Jakobstrasse (Jacobs Street) at Market Plaza. The gateway is also around the Market Plaza. Next, the Cathedral of Trier, Built in 329-346 AD, and then destroyed by the Franks. Rebuilt in 882 and added to in 1196. St Peter's fountain sits in Market Plaza, also. And the last picture is a kabinenbahn (cable car) across the Mosel River.
