The Two Graves of General Braddock

 The Two Graves of General Braddock.

Major General Edward Braddock was mortally wounded in the Battle of Monongahela on July 9, 1755 and died July 13, 1755. His body was buried in the Braddock Road to avoid discovery and possible desecration by natives. His remains were removed and reburied nearby in 1804.

Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, July 1985

Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial, Hamm, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg. I visited here on our way back into West Germany from a weekend vacation to Lux City. This place is big. 5,076 burials including General George S. Patton. A lot of the dead fought at the Battle of the Bulge. The Battle was fought nearby in the winter of 1944/45. This was one of the trips I made within my first six weeks in Europe.

The drive east across Wyoming involved several planned stops and a few unplanned. One that was planned was the Sacajawea Cemetery in Fort Washakie on the Wind River Indian Reservation. The cemetery sits a little outside of town and took us some back and forth to find. This was one of the most colorful cemeteries I think I've ever been in.

The battlefield was about and hour and 45 minutes north of where we were staying in Buffalo, Wyoming. The battlefield is broken into two parts, Last Stand HIll and the Reno Benteen Defence Site, 4 1/2 miles away. The markers of the fallen, cavalry and Native Americans, were scatter out farther than just those on Last Stand Hill. The museum in the visitor's center told the stories and showed the artifacts from the battle. The national monument also includes the Custer National Cemetery, which was open to veterans of all wars until closing to further interments in 1978.
