Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department, Station 22, 13885 Youngstown Pittsburgh Road, Petersburg, Ohio. Mahoning County. This station was built in 1940, STVFD operate out of 3 stations.

Headlands Beach

This is a shot of Headlands Beach along Lake Erie, just east of Cleveland. That is the West Breakwater Light in Fairport Harbor.
You can tell I've hit a lull in my picture-to-post stack here on my desk. I've been going back through some oldies lately. I should put gas in the scanner and fire it up for some Way-Back pictures. Yeah, maybe I'll do that. Until then bear with me.

Jacobs Field, Cleveland

Here we are, another Sunday, another day at the ball park. This week we go back in time. Back to 2002. The place Cleveland, Ohio. The park, Jacobs Field. The home team, the Indians. I had to go back into the old boxes and find these. Believe it or not... first box. Anyways, I want you to look at these pictures and notice two important things. Number one, the sign says, "Jacobs Field" This was before they sold out to some insurance company and renamed it Progressive Field. Wasn't Flo enough? Number two, take a look at that infield. It's black. Don't know what it was but the infield at Jacob's Field was darker than anywhere else and I liked that. And that last picture with the little man... quick who is the Indians Mascot? We saw him from across the field and ran t o catch him as he was sliding out of the upper deck.

OK, the game. Saturday August 10th, 2002. A rare afternoon game. Just me and my son, the girls were off doing something that interested them. The opponent, the Texas Rangers, with their highly overpaid shortstop E-Rod. This day the 'W' goes to the Tribe, 4 to 3. Texas had tied it up in the top of the 8th but bottom of the ninth it proved to be Cleveland's game. Winning pitcher was Ryan Drese for starter Bob Wickman. Losing pitcher was Dan Kolb for starter Rob Bell, who left the game losing after 6 innings. Ellis Burks knocked in the only homer of the game for the Indians. Other notable players for Cleveland were Jim Thome at first, Milton Bradley in center and Omar Vizquel at short. The list for the Rangers starts with Alex Rodriguez at shortstop, Ivan 'Pudge' Rodriguez behind the plate, Raffy Palmeiro as DH, Carl Everett in right field and as always Michael Young at second base. And finally the Indians mascot? Slider.

Butterflies of Cleveland

Today we travel back in time to last summer and our quick trip to Cleveland. Along with seeing Lake Erie and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame we visited the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. At the CBG there was a butterfly house. I wish I would have taken more pictures of them. There was a blue one too but my pictures of him didn't turn out too good. So, for today I give you butterflies and moths.

SkyWatch over Lake Erie

A little more LakeWatch than SkyWatch this week. Actually this comes from Lake Erie last summer, Headlands Beach just east of Cleveland, Ohio. This was one of my test shots while I waited on the "Good" sunset colors. This then begs the question is there such a thing as a bad sunset? No sunset, maybe. But a bad sunset? It's like pizza, even when it's not that great it's still pretty good.

Poles of America (PG XCVI)

Another Painted Gentleman from Cleveland. I think this one was also along Broadway at Forman Avenue. The Alliance of Poles of America was established in Cleveland in 1895 by dissatisfied members of the Polish National Alliance (PNA), who disagreed with the PNA's decision to admit as members Poles who were not Catholic. This building is their National Headquarters built in 1926. The organization has 17,00 members in 83 branches in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Elgin Furniture, Cleveland (PG XCIII)

Sometime when you Google to see what it is you are looking at you are surprised for one reason or another. I Googled Elgin's. Obviously, this storefront on the 5200 block of Broadway at McBride is closed. This is the review my search turned up. The only review to pop up. "TERRIBLE COMPANY - BAD COMMUNICATIONS - THEIFS... This company is horrible. They will rob you blind. Uncaring! Horrible horrible communications!! DO NOT DEAL WITH THIS COMPANY!" Elgin's Furniture on Lorain Avenue made out a little better with a "Nice furniture at reasonable prices". I'll bet Mr. Elgin wrote that second one.

Smith's Barber Shop, Cleveland (PG LXXXV)

Smith's Barber Shop is closed today. Has been for a while now. Here's another Honest Scrap Tobacco ad from Cleveland, Ohio. This one is on East 103rd Street at Cedar Avenue. Some of what I can make out on here is (somebody) Bros, Shoes of Quality. Fine Shoe Repairing. See the boot there just above and to the right of the three windows? And Kirk's Flake. Kirk's Flake was a soap known as "That Wonderful White Soap" in ads of the early 1900's. And of course Honest Scrap Tobacco.

A Little Bit of Everything (PG LXXXI)

It's good to be back and it's good to see everybody else out there can't help but look up and notice when they pass a Painted Gentleman. This week, number 81, is one that slipped by the ohiobarn.com guys and it's in Ohio! I quickly pulled to the side of the street in downtown Ravenna, Ohio when I caught sight of this out of the corner of my eye. It's at 117 West Main Street at a place called, get this, Cheap Tobacco. When I shot this I was thinking, "Bull Durham" which is plain to see. But look at the circular design in the upper left. That made me think, "Mail Pouch". Look closely... it is a Mail Pouch. It also says, "Drink..." but I can't make out the name. the bottom says, " That Made M..." I don't know what that is the slogan for. I guess Mr. C. A. Beckley would sell anything to anyone, Stove, Furnaces, House Furnishings, Goods, etc. Keep your eye out one could be around any corner.

The West Breakwater Wall

These are the rocks I traversed on my way to the West Breakwater Light off of Headlands Beach in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. If you look at the first picture the light foundation can be seen in the upper right hand corner and the structures extending to the left is where the fisherman was trying to wrestle his fish from a hungry muskrat. And the second picture show one of the many examples of chiseled graffiti in these very large rocks. Apparently Morrie must have really enjoyed his trip out along the rocks so much, back on August 8th, 1945, that he left this tiny memorial to his accomplishment.

And Now for Something Completely Different

Different for the end of October, at least. I hate to say it but I have not taken any fall pictures yet. That's just not like me. So, today I'm posting a mid-summer lily pad picture. This was a part of the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, taken right before the rains came. Road tripping tomorrow, so maybe something new from that.

Floral Cleveland

These are some of the flowers that were blooming during my stay in Cleveland. The burgundy lilies, I believe, were near the Case Western Reserve University campus and the orange flowers were growing outside the fence of the Botanical Gardens.

Pickle Bill's Lobster House (PG LXXVI)

This is Pickle Bill's Lobster House on River Street in Grand River, Ohio. I found this one by accident, I was looking for the old Fairport Harbor lighthouse and stumbled onto Bill's. I never did find the old lighthouse. According to their website the original restaurant at this location burned down and reopened in January of 2000, so this is definitely a reproduction. And by the volume of traffic it must be THE place to be.

Flowers at the CBG

I've posted a bunch of pictures already from the Cleveland Botanical Gardens, birds, water falls, the arches and sculptures, but it occurred to me that I haven't posted any flower pictures yet. I mean, I went to the "Botanical Gardens" you would think that is all you would see. Well here is a taste. As you can tell from the lily I wasn't lying when I said it rained. The orange flower was inside the Costa Rican cloud forest building the others were in one of the many gardens outside.

Janadek Bakery (PG LXXIII)

Tobacco free again this week and back to Cleveland. I found this one just going around the block looking for something else. I utilized the old hit and run technique here. I think all I did was open the door stand up,shoot the picture and get going, not the bestest of neighborhoods.

In use for over 30 years.

I don't know what all the white is to through the middle or the ...PIA in the bottom right is.

Gold Medal flour is now a part of Betty Crocker.

Back to the tobacco next week with an awesome one I'd bet you've never seen.

Birds in the Glasshouse

These birds live in the Lush Rainforest of Costa Rica Glasshouse at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens. As near as I can tell the blue guy is a male Red Legged Honeycreeper, aka Blue Honeycreeper. And from what I've read on the CBG website the green bird is the female version of the same bird. I like how her wings look transparent in the last picture.
