Shamrock Fire Company No. 11

This is the old Shamrock Fire Company No. 11 station on Herr Street in Harrisburg, PA. The fire station was closed in 1980 along with 3 other old stations, one of the last of the volunteer fire departments in the city. What the building is now, I'm not sure, the signs read that it is a part of the Bethesda Mission, a local homeless shelter, but I see carpet trucks here often. I'm sure there are guys reading this that can tell you more about this than I can Google. Go here for an interesting read on the closing of the fire stations in Harrisburg. Here is the city's fire station history page.

Jack Frost Nipping at My Nose

5 degrees. It was 5 degrees when I got out of my truck this morning. By sunrise it was the mustache-icicles bothering me more than the nose nipping. And my feet when numb soon after that. Yesterday brought the first measurable snow to the area, about 4" here, the snow and clear skies made for a beautiful, but cold morning in the woods. I just love mornings like this. Crystal clear, like you can see forever. Of course days like this are better appreciated 3 pairs of pants, 4 shirts and a coat.

The third picture is, apparently, an ongoing series I inadvertently started. See the yellow fall leaves here. See the fog here.

ps. Blogger isn't letting me load pictures right now I'll try again this evening. Got'em now.

Coca-Cola, The Druggist and Crown Fried Chicken (PG XXXVII)

Unbeknownst to Mr. F. J. Althouse, the Druggist, he and his building are Painted Gentleman No. 37. Of course his building is now a chicken shack and his neighborhood rates high on the pucker-factor scale for someone who is as ethnically neutral as I am, even so, my camera and I walked with a purpose among the other characters out enjoying the afternoon. Crown Fried Chicken is on the northwest corner of Market Street and 13th Street in the Mount Pleasant area (I think) of Harrisburg, PA. Obviously the grafifittist did their work before the adjoining building was demolished, but it still adds a little personal touch to the Real Thing. I'll bet there are more of these hidden in Harrisburg and every other town I drive through. I'll have to keep my eyes open.

Pine Stars

Just another view of what you see every day. Hunting has been slow, so before I leave the woods I see what I can take a picture of. Some things are just blah, some things jump out at you. I really liked how these turned out.

Oh Tannenbaum

Yesterday was Christmas tree day. Most years you ride out on the wagon walk around for 20 minutes then get a tree back were the tractor is waiting for you. This year we avoided the walking around and cut the 2nd tree we looked at. Of course, we had to wait for the tractor and wagon to came back before we could leave. So now the tree is up and undecorated, I'll be functioning better later, besides the weather is to be in the crapper today and that'll give me something to do.
By the way (caution: useless knowledge ahead) the old song "Oh Tannenbaum" or "Oh Christmas Tree" is German and dates as far back as 1550. Check it out.

The Barn with the Cool Cats

These are the same Cat lifts from this post. This barn is all that remains of a farm that is now a trucking terminal.
