Baseball's Ugly Side

I apologize in advance, again, but sometimes I just need to keep it real (like the kids these days say). Baseball isn't all fun and games. It isn't all 'your team hitting home runs, the other team striking out'. It isn't like you would see in the old news reels where the players run the bases in fast slow motion and everyone in the stands looks like they just came from church. Some people these days check their pride at the turnstiles. At 7 bucks a beer I can't imagine they're drunk. So except for the Detroit Rookie pitcher with the Dora the Explorer back pack on these people have no excuses.

Again, I'm sorry.

18. Chambersburg's Old Fire Stations

Like I said, "too easy". These are Chambersburg's old stations...

First station... Friendship Fire Company #1 at East Point, the intersection of South Queen and Lincoln Way East. Organized in 1780 this building was built in 1911.

Second station... Junior Hose and Truck Co. #2's station at 31 North Second Street. Organized in 1872 this building was built in 1884.

Third station... Cumberland Valley Hose Co. #5. Located on Broad Street it is now the Chamersburg Fire Museum. Among other things Juniors old 1936 Ward LaFrance pumper is parked in here.

The View from Eutaw Street

One of my top five skies to see. This is the sky over Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Maryland. Last Sunday we drove down to see the final game of the season for the Orioles. Unfortunately they lost this one to the Detroit Tigers. They did, however, win 3 of the 4 games last weekend against the Tigers. The first is the view from the flag court and the second is outside the main Eutaw Street entrance. This one shows the retired numbers of Jim Palmer - 22, Brooks Robinson - 5 and Cal Ripken, Jr. - 8. It also shows the statue 'Babe's Dream' since Babe Ruth lived in a row home that was located somewhere in center field. The retired numbers for Earl Weaver - 4, Frank Robinson - 20, Eddie Murray - 33 and Jackie Robinson - 42 are to the right of these between the Sports Legends Museum and the ticket windows.

I'm sure no one remembers that the warehouse at Camden Yards was PG 60, from April 9, 2008. Here is a different view from last weekend in Baltimore. This is the side away from the ballpark along the railroad and I-395. And the van must be their version of Scooby's Mystery Machine, I guess.

More of the Orioles in action... Jeremy Guthrie catching the ceremonial first pitch... Brad Bergesen throwing the games first pitch. A strike... Jim Johnson winding up in the top of the ninth... Matt Wieters at bat... Nick Markakis swinging through (hint: the catcher has the ball)... Adam Jones fouling on off... Luke Scott (Luuuuuuuuuuuuke) trying to extend the game.

Baltimore! Finally.

I finally made it to my first baseball game of the year. It was the last regular season game of the year. The Orioles under Buck Showalter's command have been more than impressive and I can't wait til next year. Unfortunately they have been having trouble completing the sweep here lately. Sunday was no different with a loss following three wins against the Detroit Tigers. I realized Saturday that my son and I went to our first Orioles game in 2000. It was the last game of the year. We got to see Cal Ripken (shown at bat in the second picture). This year it was Nick Markakis (shown at bat yesterday in the first picture). This means one thing. Theme week: O's Game.
