Chincoteague Drawbridge

Well, I'm in town this week so I'm gonna try for a low number when I sign for SkyWatch this afternoon. I've been bored lately so I thought I'd spice things up a bit today and add a blue tint to this picture from last summer. The drawbridge that used to take you onto Chincoteague Island has lost it's traffic since the new causeway opened up a couple years ago. The new route gives boaters and campers a straighter shot onto the beach road and took a lot of traffic out of downtown. Which is fine. I just hope they don't ever take out the drawbridge.

C.O. Bigelow's Pharmacy (PG 167)

Back to my usual Painted Gentlemen. This here is C.O. Bigelow's Pharmacy in the West Village of New York City. Located along the Avenue of the Americas near 6th Avenue. their claim to fame is that since they've been around since 1838 they are the oldest apothecary in America. I don't know anything about that so I'll take their word. What I do know is that is some cool advertising.

Flying High Over Altoona

Last week was spent in Altoona, Blair County, Pa. Not much going on there. Work was usually from dark to dark so there were no picture runs. I saw a bunch of things to capture, some old firehouses, a unique Painted Gentleman and several interesting buildings. But I got none of that. We were working briefly at Gospel Hill Park, downtown near 14th Street and 14th Avenue, where I shot this flag and strung together some images for a short movie. Wednesday evening brought snow. It brought snow a good two hours before we quit for the day. From my hotel room balcony I could see these flags illuminated and flying over the James E. Van Vandt VA Medical Center next door. Look closely you can see the snow.

As Starkness Falls

Tired. Bored. Saw this tree row this morning and no oncoming traffic. Aren't we all lucky. But how do you make something as boring as a leafless tree row interesting? I don't know. I just don't know. This may be what I saw.

Header Review 8

Welcome to the Outskirts of Suburbia and thanks for visiting. Today's post is a review of the headers that have graced the top of this blog over the past six months. You see every picture I post here can be found by searching back through my archives. The headers though are used for their respective month and than discarded. I spend some time on these so I showcase them twice a year.

November 2010 - Some remaining quakie leaves hanging onto the aspen trees along Broadway in downtown Eagle, Colorado last fall.

December 2010 - My annual Christmas card to all y'all. Taken up in amongst them. This mule deer doe watched as I dug my camera from my pack and then posed for me. Had her big brother been around I would have been looking through a different piece of glass.

January 2011 - A view of the shadows of the railroad bridge over Second Street in Harrisburg from the top of the hospital parking garage.

February 2011 - Downtown Chambersburg, Pennsylvania this time. Taken during Icefest.

March 2011 - Weeds in my garden that needed to be pulled. Instead, I share them with you.

April 2011 - Sunset over North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Cumberland County Fire Training Center 1981

30 years ago. April 1981. Cumberland County Fire Training Center. Claremont Road, Carlisle. Shippensburg Fire Department spent the day in the burn building. This may have been the final day of Essentials of Firefighting, but it may have been just a departmentwide training. The engine is Engine 152, our borough owned engine, a 1976 International Bruco. CV's had their new air unit here, the 1980 Chevrolet that eventually was given to the Vigilant's Fire Police who eventually (January 2011) gave it back the 53. My other picture show guys from WEFR, CV and Vigilant. I'll have to stop by here this spring. I think these buildings have been replaced.

Skirmish Line

A view along the skirmish line of Union troops during March to Destiny in the streets of Shippensburg, Pa. This annual event commemorates the Confederates passing through the town in June of 1863 on their way to the real fight over the South Mountain in Gettysburg. This reenactment was from 2008 and after I worked the picture I realized I had posted it back in 2008, but as a full color version.
