Randomness

Happy Labor Day. Today I have for your viewing pleasure some random shots around the old University Lodge in Shippensburg. As we speak there is little more that a days worth of dump trucking and the site of this former hotel will be a vacant lot.

Gulls in the Puddles

Shortly before we arrived in Chincoteague last month, they had a rain shower. And by shower I mean 3 inches in an hour. When we drove around the island that afternoon we found these gulls hanging out in the puddles on the south end of the island. Top one is a Laughing Gull the bottom two pictures (same gull) is a Herring Gull.

Friday Night Football 2010

Friday night football has returned to Shippensburg. Last night the Greyhounds easily handled their opponent in a season opening 41-0 win. I few observations from a forgetful picture taker, obviously I have forgotten most of what I learned about shooting under the stadium lights. Wide open appature. Slow the shutter, but not too slow or everything blurs. High ISO, which will make everything grainy. Multiple shots to get the best one. Most fields have hot spots and cold spots when it comes to the lights. By the way the cheerleaders push-up the score after every change in score. So... 7 + 14 + 21 + 27 + 34 + 41 = 144. Way to go girls. Not too shabby either guys.

15. Cumberland County Fire stations

Quick and easy. All of these have been spotlighted here in the Outskirts of Suburbia before.
First station is Cumberland Goodwill Fire Company. Took this in April. The building is for sale at the time I took this. Since then the fireman's statue has been moved to the Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services building on Spring Road.
Second station is Lower Allen Township Fire Department station 1. They moved in 2008 to a new station on Gettysburg Road.
Third station is Friendship Hose Co. No. 1, Newville. They occupied this station from 1916 until 1979.

Name that Station 15

Back again this week. I hope to get some new stations this holiday weekend. Until then here are some old school firehouses. Remember the rules... answers at 1 the afternoon.

Pre-Dawn

Imagine my surprise while driving across the beach road to the Assateague shoreline when I stopped to snap a couple images of the pre-dawn glow reflecting off of Swans Pool Cove. I quickly switched to the big lens. Then it was a fight to steady the camera on the door frame, after I turned the truck off, and try to capture these four whitetail deer crossing a shallow section of the cove. Some pictures are made and some are handed to you to do the best you can with them. Ever capture something like this and ask yourself, "Why did I stop here this morning?"

The Bakery in Lock Haven (PG 152)

One more Gentleman I found while walking around Lock Haven last month. These seems to be another painted underneath the "BAKERY", through the windows. Probably a flour sign. I can't tell. This sits near the corner of Bellefonte Avenue and East Church Street.
